Description: Qualaquin (quinine) is a cinchona alkaloid.

Quinine inhibits nucleic acid synthesis, protein synthesis, and glycolysis in Plasmodium falciparum and can bind with hemazoin in parasitized erythrocytes. However, the precise mechanism of the antimalarial activity of quinine sulfate is not completely understood.

Deal Structure: In April 2012, Takeda and URL Pharma entered into a definitive agreement where Takeda will acquire URL Pharma for an upfront payment of $800 million and future performance-based contingent earn out payments. Upon completion of the acquisition, URL Pharma will be managed by Takeda. The acquisition closed in June 2012.
