Drug Names(s): Epothilone B, Patupilone

Description: EPO906 (Epothilone B) is a naturally occurring macrolide and is the first in a new class of compounds that, like the taxanes (paclitaxel), stablizes microtubules. Microtubule stabization results in the inhibition of cell division and tumor growth.

EPO906 more potent than paclitaxel at microtubule stabilization. In preclinical studies, Patupilone was shown to block mitosis and induce apoptosis greater than the frequently used anticancer drug paclitaxel.
