Drug Names(s): Ampicillin sodium and Sulbactam sodium
Description: Unasyn is an injectable antibacterial combination consisting of the semisynthetic antibiotic, Ampicillin sodium, and the beta-lactamase inhibitor, Sulbactam sodium.
Ampicillin, like other members of the aminopenicillin class, exhibits improved activity relative to earlier generation penicillins against many Gram-(-) bacteria. It is also active against Streptococci and Enterococci, but is rapidly inactivated by the beta lactamases produced by Staphylococci.
The addition of Sulbactam protects Ampicillin from degradation and effectively extends the antibiotic spectrum of Ampicillin to include Staphylococci (including methicillin-sensitive but not methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and some, but not all, beta lactamase producing Gram-(-) organisms.
