Drug Names(s): Colestipol
Description: Colestid is a polymer resin that binds bile acids in the gut, preventing them from being reabsorbed and leading to their excretion. Cholesterol is the major precursor of bile acids, which are made in the liver. The loss of bile acids leads to lower liver cell cholesterol, resulting in an increase in thenumber of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors, increased hepatic uptake of LDL anda decrease in beta lipoprotein or LDL serum levels, and a decrease in serum cholesterollevels. Although there is also an increase in the hepatic synthesis of cholesterol, serum cholesterol levels fall.
