Description: Zyban is a relatively weak inhibitor of the neuronal uptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, and does not inhibit monoamine oxidase or the re-uptake of serotonin. The mechanism by which zyban enhances the ability of patients to abstain from smoking is presumed to be mediated by noradrenergic and/or dopaminergic mechanisms. The increase in norepinephrine may attenuate nicotine withdrawal symptoms and the increase in dopamine at neuronal sites may reduce nicotine cravings and the urge to smoke. Zyban exhibits moderate anticholinergic effects.
