Delucemine

Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC

Drug Names(s): NPS 1506

Description: Early explorations of spider and scorpion venoms provided clues for the discovery of new classes of compounds, including delucemine, that act as neuroprotectants in animal models of stroke. This compound targets open NMDA receptor-operated calcium channels and blocks the channel. By blocking these channels, which open in response to the neurotransmitter glutamate, delucemine prevents excessive calcium influx during ischemia. This stabilizes cell chemistry and minimizes cell death.

Deal Structure: NPS and Shire
In January 2015, Shire and NPS Pharmaceuticals entered into a merger agreement pursuant to which Shire will acquire all the outstanding shares of NPS Pharma for $46.00 per share in cash, for a total consideration of approximately $5.2 billion. In February 2015, Shire announced the successful completion of the tender offer for all of the outstanding shares of NPS and the subsequent acquisition of NPS.
